INTO THE HOLLOWAY. A WALK AT DUSK, 2018

Paintings and Films

40 painted sequences (325 paintings) forming a connected line of images that form a track along internal walls.

Into the Holloway, A Walk at Dusk consists of 40 painted ‘sequences’ or themed groups of paintings, that collectively form an extensive artwork. It’s overarching theme is night walking and connecting with the hidden histories of specific places. It was conceived in October 2010 during a visit to Venice, and developed as a single line – a metaphor for a linear walk from dusk to dawn. Each sequence has a specific theme or line of thought. There is an alchemy when a place and its histories merge with the vagaries of one’s thoughts along the way.

Into the Holloway’s 325 paintings are on small canvas blocks. Most are made in oil and measure 152 x 102 x 36mm (6 x 4 x 1.4”).

Into the Holloway, A Walk at Dusk was originally presented as a single line to form a metaphor for a long, overnight walk. Just as in a walk, this linear character can be reconfigured. Here, Into the Holloway is installed in a different format – think perhaps of a series of short, overlapping strolls rather than a long, linear walk.
